'Energy for All' - Make Your Point! 10/01/2012
Hot off the EWB-UK newsletter is a Practical Action campaign to highlight the issue of energy access around the world - definitely worth a look! '1.4 billion people worldwide have no access to electricity and 2.5 billion still rely on collecting fuels like firewood for cooking and heating. Energy is vital for poverty reduction because it gives people the power to improve their lives. We want to achieve the UN goal of Energy for All by 2030, but most people aren't even aware that energy poverty is a problem! You can help, visit Practical Action's campaign site to make your point.' Vertical axis wind turbines are more uncommon than their horizontal counterpart and so we thought it would be interesting to put together a workshop which would demonstrate a miniature Savonius design in action. A wooden frame was erected to provide support and the turbine itself consisted of a split bottle with each half facing in different directions, acting like cups. There were magnets attached to the bottom of the turbine which when rotating passed over the magnet coils below to induce a current. Due to the high resistance of the copper wire we only managed to produce a very small current. Click the photo to see the rest of the gallery for this event. All Energy Conference 2010 12/02/2011
