GCID, CRADALL & Global Education at the Conforti Institute are pleased to host the launch of the 6th Edition of “80:20 - Development in an unequal world”.  80:20 provides a comprehensive introduction to many of the major development, human rights and justice issues which affect us all.

Prof Anne Glover, Chief Science Adviser for Europe, will present on the role of researchers in science policy. This talk is running in conjunction with a two day 'Sustainability, impact and engagement' course for early-career researchers at the University of Glasgow.

Prof Glover's lecture is free and open to the public, and we welcome all with an interest in science policy to attend this talk. The event will conclude with a reception in the Wolfson Atrium.

Foreign & Commonwealth Office

Joe will present 'Know Before You Go' (KBYG), an ongoing campaign run by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, which aims to help UK citizens to stay safe and healthy abroad. His talk will cover possible complications of travelling abroad, what the FCO can do to help, and support from the UK Government available to travellers.

If you have any plans to travel overseas in the near future, particularly to less developed countries, this is an essential breakdown of the preparations you need to make and what to do if you get into trouble.

This will be our last meeting of the year, so if you've been washing your hair this whole time, this is your last chance to make the most of EWB. This also means saying goodbye to most of our committee, so if you have any interest in taking part in the society next year, please stick around afterwards to see how you can get involved!

This week we have a few things running.

DFID are giving a talk on their Grad scheme in the Boyd Orr 5.30pm on Monday, not sure what room yet but will likely be in one of the big theatres.www.dfid.gov.uk/graduate

Since last week’s email didn’t send we will be running last week’s workshop this week. Titled living with physical & sensory impairments Tue 31 Jan 2012, 6pm, Boyd Orr Building Room 506.  and will look at how various handicaps affect daily life in the developing world.

Finally on Wednesday the 8th Rwanda Scotland Alliance (RwSA) & GCID will be running an event allowing you to network and meet with people working to support development in Rwanda, There will be stalls, talks and multimedia presentations from a wide range of projects and organisations. Sorry for the lateness of this email, this week we will be meeting at 6pm on Tuesday in Boyd Orr 506. Our president will be putting on a workshop looking at the issues of being disabled in the developing world.

GCID are running a work shop in the 31st of January for anyone who is preparing for fieldwork, an overseas project  or has an interest in international development. This will run from 10am to 1pm, see attached file for details.

On to other business there are three competitions that you may be interested in. firstly Arup's resilient Cities competition, this competition is for university students  to study part of their city and decide whether it is resistant to shocks (flooding drought etc), four people will get summer placements with Arup, for a better explanation see the link

Secondly is the Bosch Horizons award which encourages young people to consider the role that technology and engineering play in everyday life. With essay questions focusing on the Olympics and green technology, for further details see, http://www.bosch.co.uk/technologyhorizons/

Finally is the Tattarillo International Award this is open to Dissertations / Thesis’s and final year projects that looked in to appropriate technology three main prizes of £1000 are up for grabs. Here at EWB we hope you enjoyed the holidays, although we realise there's nothing quite like coming back to uni for 9 o'clock lectures.

Anyway, to brighten things up a bit, we're pleased to announce that our first meeting of the new term will go ahead TONIGHT at 6pm, same Tuesday slot as last year. Unfortunately there's a room clash this week only, so just for tonight you'll find us in Boyd Orr LT E (room 611, 6th floor).

This first meeting will simply be used to plan what we'll aim to do this semester, so while there won't be any entertainment provided, it is the perfect opportunity to have your say, tell us about something cool you want to build, suggest a topic to focus on etc.

If you can't make it along tonight for whatever reason, don't panic, just drop suggestions, cool web links, ideas, abuse, whatever into an email and send it back to us at glasgow@ewb-uk.org - we'll make as much of it come true as possible. Except maybe the abuse.

Edinburgh EWB is hosting this year inter-branch event, showcasing international development Workshops and Discussions on Engineering, Education, Community Participation and Intermediate Technology.

             Sat 5th November – Hands on Workshops

Cost:     The first day of the event is free for all EWB-UK members to attend. The interactive workshop is £15, this will cover the workshop expenses, accomodation on Friday & Saturday nights, lunch and refreshment.

Why:     A chance to get your hands dirty and test your knowledge and ideas. Understand some of the complexities in delivering sustainable and appropriate solutions to problems in the developing world. Most of all to have fun and join in your national community of EWB, with members from Glasgow, Strathcylde, Newcastle, Durham and Edinburgh.

Places are limited to 10 and these will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Any persons applying after this will be kept on a shortlist, if more places become available. To RSVP, reply to glasgow@ewb-uk.org ASAP!

Please find attached detailed timings, albeit with talk and workshop content still to be confirmed.

EWB Strathclyde will be coming over to help launch our outreach program with the "water for the world" workshop so if you are looking to get in to outreach then this is a must. If you’re not interested in outreach come along any way Strathclyde have been running this workshop for over a year so it should be great. Also if you have any questions about our by-election the positions available or how the committee works we will be happy to answer them.

After this we will be heading over to the GUES pub quiz in the GU, hopefully we will be able to put together a good team or if not good then at least huge.
